Venice Day 2 and Final Morning

The next day, we decided to check out the short cut to San Marcos Plaza. We discovered that it was quite charming and that we absolutely could not get lost if we tried since Venice's street signage is so well done and plentiful. We didn't even have to use our map since we could almost always see signs pointing in the direction of San Marcos Plaza and Roma Plaza. These signs were perfect for us since our hotel was right by Roma Plaza. When we reached San Marcos Plaza this time, we walked a little ways past the plaza along the canal. We were surprised to see a huge Minoan Lines ship in the canal. It really seemed that the ship was too large to be there.

The costumed people were looking to make money by people taking photos with them. We had to laugh when we saw a guy placing a box under one of the women's skirts—sort of how we used to store boxes under the table skirts at a Peekan conference!

On the way back to our hotel, we saw some workers moving a person into an apartment through a window and using a "ladder elevator." Very interesting! We also got a picture of our restaurant….Gino's.

Most of the bridges we saw in Venice were very old and quaint. But, near our hotel was a new, modern bridge connecting the bus plaza with the train station. This new bridge shows in the background of the photo with all of the poles sticking out of the water.

The boat with the yellow, white, green, pink, and blue items on it was a laundry boat full of cloth bags stuffed with laundry. We guessed it was hotel laundry since we saw similar bags in our hotel.

Roof-top plazas were both common and charming. The group of five girls in a gondola appeared to be college students from the U.S. Like us, they were very excited about taking a gondola ride.

The crane reaching out of the boat picks up garbage bins by the handles and empties them into the boat. We assumed that the garbage boats had similar, but larger, bins in them that would be picked up by a larger crane in order to empty the boats.

As we walked around Venice, we constantly encountered interesting buildings and churches and one quaint street after another. So, we just kept taking pictures! The loaded-down boat with about nine guys on it appeared to be a moving company in the middle of transporting someone's furniture to a new home.

The costumes and masks in the stores were for Carnivale, which had just ended. Apparently people buy and wear these costumes and masks for this event.

The pink building that says "Hotel Canal" was our hotel, which was right on the Grand Canal across from the train station.
